Too Faced + Kat Von D Better Together Collection Review & Swatches

Get ready because the Too Faced + Kat Von D Better Together Collection launches on Boxing Day! This collaboration between two amazing makeup brands was born of the friendship of the brand’s founders Kat and Jerrod and their respect for one another. I am absolutely loving the mix of Kat’s bold, edgy, and often dark style with Jerrod’s pink and glittering personality because the combo is so much like my own personal style.

The Too Faced + Kat Von D Better Together Ultimate Eye Collection ($65 US/$79 CAD) is the star of the collection.

This Eye Collection is actually two separate eyeshadow palettes, one in the Kat Von D signature formula and the other in the Too Faced formula, along with the best selling Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in full sizes.

I will admit I was nervous at first because sometimes special releases from Too Faced, like the Christmas in New York Collection, don’t always have the same quality of eye shadow formula as their standard releases. I was relieved and elated to discover that the six shadows in the Too Faced side of the palette are actually some of the best quality shadows I’ve seen Too Faced do to date. They are intensely pigmented and have a really buttery texture. Even the ones that have the more matte finish with sparkle, that can often tend to be dry, dusty and rather patchy, in Power Couple and Better Together, actually have beautiful colour payoff and a rich texture that is great to work with. I guess Jerrod was determined to impress his BFF Kat! Friendspiration is an absolutely stunning metallic bronze and my favourite shade in this palette.

The six shades on the Too Faced half of the heart are:

  • BFF (matte vanilla)
  • Lovely (matte baby pink)
  • Friendspiration (metallic bronze)
  • Heart of Gold (gold glitter)
  • Power Couple (antique gold glitter)
  • Better Together (plum glitter)
BFF / Lovely / Friendspiration / Heart of Gold / Power Couple / Better Together

I find the shade descriptions a little odd as Heart of Gold looks like an antique gold to me. If not a full blown soft metallic khaki as it does lean quite green. Power Couple, which is described as an antique gold glitter, is actually a deep warm brown with sparse gold glitter.

Kat Von D’s side of the detachable palette is true to her usual quality. The shadows are crazy intense and pigmented and really smooth. The mattes are a dream. So creamy and rich with no chalkiness at all. Swoon is such a great shade. It’s a softly metallic red that is a true scarlet rather than the abundance of more burgundy shades we have been seeing lately. It is really beautiful shade and finish. The black is insane. So pigmented! Actually the same goes for the matte white Por Vida. It’s one of the best matte whites I’ve seen.

  • Por Vida (matte white)
  • Lovestruck (iridescent peach)
  • Darling (metallic pewter)
  • Swoon (metallic scarlet)
  • Yours (matte stone gray)
  • Devotion (matte jet black)
Por Vida / Lovestruck / Darling / Swoon / Yours / Devotion

My only complaint with these palettes, both individually and as a pair, is that there is no midtone matte or satin shade to use in the crease. Any of the matte or almost matte shades are very dark. I find I do need to incorporate at least one other shadow for my crease when working with these palettes. Even when doing a more intense smoky eye with the gray and black in Kat’s palette I still like to incorporate a softer transition shade to ease into the shade Yours.

The Too Faced + Kat Von D Better Together Cheek & Lip Makeup Bag Set ($38 US/$47 CAD) is so super cute! It includes a heart shaped makeup pouch that features Jerrod’s fur baby Clover with a glittering pink background and Kat’s fur baby Piaf on a black background.

The interior of the bag features a black lining with both the Too Faced and Kat Von D logos. There is also a dual sided charm on the zipper pull. They really thought of everything!

Inside the makeup bag you find four deluxe trial sized products:

  • Too Faced Deluxe Candlelight Glow Highlighter in Rosy Glow. You can find my full review on this highlighter here. I love it! So handy having an adorable mini.
  • Too Faced Deluxe Love Flush Blush in a new exclusive shade So Happy Together. It is a vibrant peony pink with the loveliest sheen.
  • Kat Von D Deluxe Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in the new shade XO. A stunning matte oxblood red.
  • Kat Von D Deluxe Studded Kiss Lipstick in the new shade Muse. It’s a lovely deep nude shade with subtle shimmer.
Rosy Glow Left / Rosy Glow Right / So Happy Together
Muse / XO / Tattoo Liner

Too Faced + Kat Von D Better Together Bestselling Mascara & Liner Duo ($20 US/$28 CAD) This is a cute little duo with deluxe trial sizes of the bestselling Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, both in black. I must admit this set does seem quite overpriced to me. It is a nice way to try out the formulas though before deciding to dish out the cash on the full sized versions.

The mini sizes are as follows:

  • 0.17 oz/ 4.8 g Mini Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara in Black
  • 0.007 oz/ 0.2 mL Mini Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper (satin black)

I did a look using a little bit of everything from this collection but I kinda hate how the pictures turned out. I will try to get some looks up for you soon!

Are you excited about this collection? I have to say I am really impressed with the Ultimate Eye Collection and the Cheek & Lip Makeup Bag Set. Really beautiful shades and wonderful quality. Plus how can you not love the pairing of Kat and Jerrod?! What will you be picking up?

Awesome post!! Super informative! I’m debating the palette. I’ve been thinking about it for some time, but I’ve bought SO many palettes recently… At least good to know that the quality is there!!

  2. Amber says:

Those palettes are super cute! I’m with you, I get irritated with palettes that don’t have a midtone blending shade. Seems kind of silly. I’d pay extra for every palette to have one though. It’s just easier in the long run!

  3. Riley says:

Hey! I wrote a review of the eye collection on my blog as well! I loved the eyeshadows (except for Power Couple and Lovestruck, but hey, it happens)
