What Makes You Beautiful?

What do you feel makes you beautiful?

Is it your eye color? Maybe you really love your cheekbones? Or perhaps you are always being complimented on your long, thick hair?

Maybe you feel it’s your makeup that makes you beautiful? You aren’t happy with the face looking back at you in the morning but after you’ve applied your makeup you appreciate how the definition and shades bring out the best of your features?

Have you ever known a person who was aesthetically quite visually stunning yet you found them ugly? Their demeanor. Their attitude. The way they treated people. Maybe it was just a bad personal experience with them. After that, you just couldn’t see the beauty in them anymore.

Or someone who is quite pretty, yet there is something flat and lifeless about them. You know that she “should” be beautiful but there is something off. Something missing.

But perhaps you have a friend or someone you’ve encountered that, while most would at first glance find ordinary, is the most beautiful person you know. Her eyes sparkle, her smile lights up a room. Hmm there are even some crooked teeth in there, her nose is a little too big, she’s carrying an extra 30 lbs, but you don’t see that. You see radiance and beauty emanating from her. You long to be THAT beautiful. THAT enticing.

Well, I have some amazing news for you. You ARE that beautiful. That beauty is in you right now. It is longing to be seen. To be appreciated. To be shared. What is this beauty that transcends any image you scroll past on Instagram?

Well, let’s take a look at the definition of beauty. This is the definition of beauty from the Merriam Webster dictionary:

The quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.”

Pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. I find that so beautiful. And that is the part of true beauty that is missing from the over edited and perfected images of women splashed across social media. The beauty that comes from the soul. The beauty that can’t help but rise everyone up around it. It’s the beauty of living in truth. Here is my definition of beauty:

It’s an energy that you radiate out into the world. That’s the kind of beauty that can’t be ignored. The kind of beauty that can’t be boxed into any skin color, eye color, hairstyle, or face shape. That kind of beauty comes from letting your soul shine through. It comes from embodying your soul. Having that deep knowing of who you are and being that person. Having the passion to know what you truly value in life and living your life in alignment to make it a reality. It’s being in flow with who you are, owning your power, and sharing your gifts with the world. It is letting the authentic you be the person who interacts in this world. It is leaving the masks you wear behind, stepping outside the boxes and roles you’ve felt you needed to fit into in order to be accepted and loved. It’s letting the real, raw, naked and BEAUTIFUL you that you are at your core shine out into this world with no apologies. THAT is beauty.
