We say we want to make positive changes in our life. We know that we don’t need to have the whole picture figured out, we just have to take small steps towards what we desire each day, yet we find the days and weeks going by and nothing has changed.
We find ourselves trading one hamster wheel for another and look back to realize we have been continuing to let life pass us by without focusing most on what really matters. There is always some new crisis of the day to manage or some urgent thing needing our attention. Then we will start really focusing on what matters.
Well, today is the day all that stops. Today is the day we make focusing on what really matters to us in life a DAILY focus and actually begin implementing small changes DAILY that will begin creating that shift we have been desiring. No more confusion. No more getting distracted by what’s currently consuming our attention and time. No more “I’ll sit down and figure this out later”. No more “I’ll start Monday” or “I’ll start next month”.
Today we start the Make Today Matter Movement!
#MAKETODAYMATTER is a way to take the daily small steps that will create balance and harmony in your life. These simple steps will build upon each other to create lasting change in your life and take the guesswork out of ensuring you are focusing on what is truly important in your life. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Being present and making the most of the moment is the key to happiness and fulfillment in life.
No more lying in bed at night regretting that another day slipped by without you giving attention to what really matters. Because here’s the truth, those nights lying in bed in regret end up turning into lying on your deathbed realizing how much time you wasted on things that, in the end, didn’t matter.
Don’t spend your whole life waiting for tomorrow. Make today matter!
The Make Today Matter Movement involves incorporating 3 easy and flexible steps into your day to ensure there are balance and harmony in all the areas of your life. And here’s the best part. You are probably already taking some of these steps in your day. It’s all about creating balance. If you are already focusing daily on one or more of these areas then you do not need to add anything new. Just Make Today Matter by making sure that you are doing at least one of these things from each of the three areas. That may mean only one or two worthwhile additions to your day. The best part is, as the days and weeks go along with you dedicating your time and attention on the things that really matter, the more naturally you will begin incorporating more and more things into your day that are important to you. It will become second nature and your new way of truly living your life will become your new norm.
The steps you will take daily are completely up to you. They can be small or they can be big. The point is to be doing SOMETHING each day in each of these areas that matters to you.
The three areas we are looking to give attention to each day are:
Love and Relationships (Connection) – Your friends and your family, these are probably the most important things in your life, yet our relationships are often the first thing to slide when we get distracted or stressed out by other things in our life. Ensure that every day you are valuing the most important relationships in your life.
This could include steps like:
- Having a meaningful conversation with someone you care about.
- Reaching out to an old friend you haven’t talked to in a while.
- Spending quality time with your children without devices and distractions.
- Sitting down to dinner with your family and talking about your day.
- Giving your spouse or kids your undivided attention for 15 minutes of your day.
- Planning a get together with friends.
- Forgiving someone that has hurt you in your past
Health (Feeling Energetic and Vibrant) – Without our health, we don’t have a life to live. All those things you are stressing out about, be it work, finances, or your social life won’t mean a damn thing if you are dead. Taking care of this vessel of ours must be a top priority yet we often sabotage our physical health in an attempt to get further ahead in other areas of our lives. Being healthy and FEELING good is a necessity for enjoying our lives and making moments matter. Make sure that each day you are taking a step towards better, more optimal health.
This could include steps like:
- Going to the gym or completing a home workout.
- Going for a walk.
- Going to the doctor.
- Going for a massage.
- Avoiding processed food.
- Eating more fruits and vegetables.
- Avoiding foods you are intolerant too like dairy or sugar.
- Preparing a home cooked meal.
- Remembering to take your supplements
- Practicing self-care
There are any number of steps you can take to improve your physical health. The key is to make it a focus of your life by each day choosing at least one step towards improving your overall health.
Personal Fulfillment (Giving Attention to Something that is Important and Rewarding in your Life) – This will be a little harder to give examples for as this will be deeply personal. The key is, figure out what is important to you and make sure you are giving attention to it each day. This could be your personal and spiritual development. Working towards your career goals that involve wanting to make the world a better place and improve the quality of life for others. Whatever lights YOU up and fulfills you. Your legacy you want to leave in the world. The key is to make sure every day you are spending some time on what is important to you. This step could even include spending time on figuring out what the heck exactly it is that does fulfill you!
This could include things like:
- Smiling at or paying a compliment to a stranger.
- Reading about or studying something you are interested in.
- Volunteering or sharing about a cause that’s important to you.
- Working towards your personal goals.
- Creative expression
- Doing something FUN!
Most importantly, BE PRESENT! Live in the moment and enjoy whatever experience you are having in life right now. We never know what day may be our last. Practice gratitude, appreciation, and forgiveness. It may not always be easy to see the gifts in our darkest times but I can promise you that light, that lesson, is hiding in there somewhere. Don’t waste your time living in the past with regret and disappointment. Don’t give away your time to anxiety and worries of the future. Be present in the moment and #MAKETODAYMATTER!
I recommend taking out your notebook, or using the free workbook below, and brainstorming what steps feel good to you to begin taking in each area. Keep it simple to start. You don’t need to overwhelm yourself with massive changes. They key is to just do SOMETHING. You can implement different steps each day or you can decide on one step in each area you would like to incorporate every day for a week or a month until they become part of your routine and then build on them by adding another down the road. Do what feels good and feels fun to you. Don’t worry about what I’ve suggested or what you think you “should” be doing or what other people are doing.
Don’t let another day slip by where you’ve done nothing more than bust your butt trying to pay your bills then zoning out in front of the TV.
